Rayab and the vital project increasing the safety of supplying potable water after Earthquake

Rayab Consulting Engineers, as a leading consultant for the vital project of implementation of earthquake-resistant water tanks, supervises all the processes of construction and installation of these tanks in different areas of the capital Tehran, Iran. These water tanks are unavoidable necessities not only for Tehran but for any other city endangered heavy earthquakes.

According to the studies of seismic earthquakes for Tehran, in terms of the existence of important and active faults, this question has always been raised for responsibles of the urban management that after an intensive earthquake and possible breaking of the water supply facilities and the consequent water stoppage, which can be regional or integrated, how to supply and distribute potable water to survivals and relief groups. Definitely, in the first three days after such events, the fate of people in such a metropolis depends on water.

Obviously, in such a situation, it takes time to solve the incidents and breaking of the water supply systems and normalize the flow of water in the network. Therefore, a solution should be adopted that provides the possibility of access to the minimum water necessary for survival, the conditions for saving people’s lives and also the continuation of relief operations.

The studies conducted by the Water and Sewerage Company of Tehran province, based on the idea of earthquake-resistant metal tanks that had been installed in Japan since 1980, resulted in the construction and installation of such tanks in various parks in Tehran.  In the terrible earthquake in East Japan (in 2011, which was accompanied by a devastating tsunami), this system was effectively used to provide emergency water to the victims, in the areas near where the tanks were installed. By using these tanks in the urban water distribution network, emergency and safe water supply will be possible during natural disasters and accidents.
